Error when installing WXP from VirtualPC 7 CD
(too old to reply)

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)
Processor: Power PC

I have some apps that need to be run in Windows, so I picked up a copy of VirtualPC 7 for Mac (w/ WindowsXP) and downgraded my Mac OS to Panther (10.3.9), since I read that VPC had issues with Leopard. The VPC 7 installs fine, but when I try to install XP from the same set of CDs, it installs for 20 minutes, then give me an error code (01) and says the Windows install could not be completed. That's it!! Could anyone tell me what's going on or why this is happening? I'm installing onto a Ti PB G4 with a fresh install of Panther, and I already tried installing the 7.0.3 update. Help!!

I didn't think you could install VPC with Leopard at all. I cloned my
OS X with VPC before I upgraded to Leopard, but have to repartition my
hard drive to get it back since I don't have a fire wire external.
I'm pretty sure that was Panther, not Tiger, but I'll have to double
check. However, I'm pretty sure I upgraded to Panther from Tiger —
didn't do a clean install — so maybe that's why VPC with XP kept
working? I haven't heard about the problem you are describing so I'm
totally useless as far as being helpful here, unless it turns out that
you've got to go back to Tiger and work your way up from there...

You can do a VPC install under OSX 10.5 Leopard. I did it this week on a
G4-733 running OSX 10.5.8 and it worked fine.

The XP CDs that come with VPC cannot be used to do an full
installation, they are crippled. You should just do the full install
with the pre-made XP virtual machine.

Thanks for the input...

> The XP CDs that come with VPC cannot be used to do an full
I followed the installation instructions for full install of VPC w/ XP, but when I got to step 3 (set up virtual machine), there was nothing in the Virtual PC List. I got a prompt to click the "new" button and insert the first install CD "again". This worked fine right up until I got the error message. Any idea why there was no "Virual PC XP Pro" in the Virtual PC List? I feel like I must be missing something obvious...

It has been many years since I did an install off my VPC 6 with XP CDs. I
don¹t recall the process anymore. If I have a spare G$ OSX 10.4 machine
I¹ll give it a try.

I installed VPC 7 on 10.3.9. Once I installed the application, it
restarted after installing various firewall filters and a ktext. And
the install disk asked for the 2nd disk in the set. If you didn't get
this behavior, maybe your 10.3 system is hosed. Did you install VPC on
a newly installed or existing system?

Everything else is working perfectly (lots and lots of apps), so I'm thinking that the OS is not the culprit here. The VPC disks look pristine, too, so you'd think... Any other ideas??
