kernel panic; XP has troubles too

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

A clean boot of my system (10.4.11), I launch Virtual PC for mac version 7.0.3, start up Windows XP Home in full screen and before XP is finished loading I get an error message. Something to the effect of software/hardware changes or a sudden power outage and offers me the chance to go to safe mode/safe mode with networking/whatever. At about this time my physical machine has a kernel panic.

Remarks:

- I had just recently updated to service pack 3, and gone to IE 8
- the only non microsoft software on the machine is a small, trusted piece of software from Industry Canada
- while XP is booting up my cursor still remains black à la mac - odd
- peripherals: LaCie external HD, microphone, headset
- everything was working fine yesterday, what gives?

Hi Fred, by a System roll back a presume you mean System Restore. Doing so is not possible. Windows gives me the message about hardware/software changes or power outage and the kernel panic on osx happen well before I log in to XP.

Yes that's what I meant System Restore.

Can you boot into "Safe Mode" or to a "Command Line Only"? If so from there
you can do some damage control and in Safe Mode do a System Restore I
believe.

Better yet did you make a copy or backup of the XP drive image before
upgrading? If so just copy it back and you'll be right where it was before
the upgrades. Though I never have used it before but did have "Undo Drives"
turned on in VPC?

The problem has been resolved for now. I went into windowed, rather than fullscreen, selected Safe Mode when confronted with the screen alleging the hardware changes/sudden power outage and performed a System Restore to a point in time prior to service pack 3 and IE 8. Now that everything is working I will have to investigate what caused the problem in the first place and avoid it.

Well I'd suggest before upgrading to SP3 and IE8 to make a backup of the VPC
XP drive image file. Makes recovery almost instant incase it goes bad.
